UN Pushes for Global AI Governance Amid Warnings of Catastrophic Harm
Geneva hosted the Global Dialogue on AI Governance with broad international participation - the first organized UN-led effort to establish worldwide frameworks for the fast-moving technology, days after the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI published its first report.
Scientist Yoshua Bengio, a leading member of the panel, warned that AI is approaching or surpassing human capabilities in many domains, stressing that science currently cannot guarantee that as capabilities continue to increase, AI will not cause catastrophic harm.
Participants addressed the digital divide between developed and developing nations, the concentration of frontier AI development in just two countries, and the accelerating spread of disinformation, with the UN proposed as the multilateral coordination umbrella for global governance frameworks.
